Synagogues of Bayonne
In the mid-1960s, Jews of Bayonne comprised about 20% of the community and most of their synagogues were in the downtown area near Avenue C. At that time, Bayonne supported at least six Orthodox congregations in addition to one Conservative and one Reform synagogue. Below are photos from our archives showing past synagogues of Bayonne.

The orthodox synagogue Anshe Sphard was located at 44 West 20th Street, Bayonne.

Beth Avraham chartered in 1866 and located at 44 West 21st Street was the first Bayonne synagogue.

The synagogue of Congregation Agudas Achim, formally United Brethen Synagogue was located at 67 West 22nd Street, Bayonne, NJ.

Talmud Torah, an orthodox synagogue, was located at 41-45 West 20th Street, Bayonne, NJ.

Temple Ohab Sholom, which was founded in 1915 as a religious society and became a full-fledged congregation in 1919. It was located on Avenue C near 48th Street, Bayonne, NJ.

Temple Ohab Sholom was known as the Bayonne “Uptown Synagogue.”

The original Temple Emanu-El Synagogue was located at 29th Street and Boulevard when it opened in 1913. Temple Emanu-El is a Conservative congregation and is still operating at its present location at 115 W 42nd Street, Bayonne, NJ.
