Prominent Business Men Paterson

Tire Dealership -  founded Dave Stern Tires in Paterson in1917 – Captain Jack Stern, (1900-1970), U.S. Army Air Corps, Paterson giant. This amazing man was a founder of “Dave Stern Tires” in Paterson, once one of the largest independent tire dealers in the U.S. In his spare time, among other things, he was president of the YM/YWHA; President of Barnert Hospital; Fire Commissioner of Paterson; UJA Chairman; President of the Jewish Community Center; Campaign Chairman of the Cancer Campaign; General Vice-Chairman of the Red Cross War Fund Drive; appointee of the Governor to the N.J. to the N.J. Commission on Civil Rights; and member of the Alhtaha Council, Boy Scouts of America  as well as many other positions, and died in 1970.

Manufacturer, Klotz Silk Company – an early 20th century “silk manufacturer” in Paterson, who on June 3, 1919, during the 2nd nationwide wave of local terroristic bombings, with prominent politicians and businessmen, being the victims, was among the targets. He was President of Klotz Silk, Co., a great supporter of Barnert Memorial Hospital, a Mason and an Elk, a NJ Motor Vehicle Inspector, a golfer, and a chess player.

Harry B. Haines - editor and publisher of The Paterson Evening News for 61 years, died Thursday in Doctors Hospital after a brief illness. He was 89 years old.
Mr. Haines was born on Sept. 18, 1882, in his parents’ apartment above The Altoona (Pa.) Morning Call, His father founded The Paterson Morning, Call, now part of The Paterson News, in 1885 after moving from Altoona. He then became publisher of The Paterson News, and the son followed him as publisher on his father's death in 1911.
The younger Mr. Haines was one of the first owners of an automobile in New Jersey and took part in tours with other pioneers on cross‐country trips.
He was a friend of Woodrow Wilson when Mr. Wilson was Governor of New Jersey and The News was the state's official printer.
Mr. Haines was in the Army in World War I.

Jacob Fabian, Theatre Owner, VP Stanley Fabian Enterprises, introduced Passaic County’s first facility built exclusively for the exhibition of moving pictures in 1914 (Passaic’s Regent Theatre), opened the Fabian Theatre December 15, 1925, with a showing of the silent feature, “We Moderns” starring Coleen More. The theatre was built at a site ravaged by the Silk City’s great fire of 1902.

The Fabian Theatre, designed by architect Fred Wesley Wentworth. It was originally envisioned as a stand-alone theatre, and the large office building and the Alexander Hamilton Hotel which enclose it were added as afterthoughts.

Real Estate – He was born in Passaic and graduated from NYU Medical School.  He was in the real estate business for many years in Paterson and died in 1978.
