Brandeis Women Movie Premiere 1966
The Greater Paterson Brandeis University Women’s Committee was a very active organization in the North New Jersey community. The organization sponsored many Jewish functions and fund raisers. One of the most noted events, was the sponsoring of the 1966 premiere opening of the movie “Cast A Giant Shadow.” Kirk Douglas, who starred in the movie, attended the premiere showing at Cinema 46 in Totowa, NJ. The film is loosely based on the life of a Jewish-American, a West Point graduate, Colonel Mickey Marcus who who commanded units of the "Haganah" in Israel's 1948 War of Independence. As the new State's first general officer, he was credited with designing command control structures and for overseeing the building of the "Burma Road" to break the siege of Jerusalem. Tragically, he was shot and killed by a sentry at night in a freak incident for not knowing the password for returning into the army's position. Below is the Morning Call’s news coverage of the premiere opening.
