Businesses and Shops

Today is “Black Friday,” the name given to the day after Thanksgiving when many businesses and shops conduct sales in the hope of moving them “into the black.”  Black Friday became identified with shopping and sales in the late 1960’s. Below are photos of local businesses and shops and their owners which conducted their businesses prior to Black Friday.

Auto Equipment Inc., truck aftermarket, Zachary.
Zachary, pictured on the right above was a Russian emigrant who founded Auto Equipment Inc. in the early 1920s in Passaic NJ. He became a senior statesman of the truck aftermarket. In the 1940s he moved his shop to Market Street in Paterson as depicted in the photo on the right.

Patersonian Louis Jasper, shown here wearing a cap with his hands resting on his hips, owned and operated the filling station pictured above at the intersection of Goffle Road and Godwin Avenue in Midland Park in the 1920's. The big fellow on the right in the background is James Pilkington.
