Collection Description
This collection contains several news items, photos of Allen Ginsberg and his family, and information from his memorial services that were donated to the JHSNNJ.
Alan Ginsberg was a 20th century Paterson native, who practiced Buddhism and was a world renowned poet and leader of the Beat Generation. The collection includes his book HOWL, and articles explaining the impact of his beloved mother on his writings as well as his father’s influence on his early work.
Additional articles report on his interviews that reveal his strong beliefs, that served as the foundation for his protests during the 1960s, his support for legalization of marijuana, the rights of the gay population and his protests against the Vietnam war.
The collection also includes photos of political and newsworthy celebrities of the world taken from the collection of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
Finally, there are articles concerning the services and events held in his memory following his death from liver cancer.
