Chorus and Choir Groups
Our Jewish culture is filled with song and music stemming from our biblical prayers and hymns and from the music and languages used during times of Jews wandering and settling in other lands. It includes songs from both the Jewish Ashkenazic and Sephardic cultures. Most of the Jewish immigrants that arrived in northern New Jersey between the 1840s to 1950s, came from Western European countries and the Russian Empire. These were the Ashkenazic Jews who spoke and sang their songs in Yiddish. As these immigrants in our area grew and became more organized, they formed singing groups which included choruses and choirs. Below are selected archived photos of some of these groups.
