Jewish Historical Society of North Jersey Awarded New Jersey Cultural Trust Grant

The grant, approved during a November 2025 public meeting. Is specifically earmarked for the establishment of a cash reserve, designed to ensure the organization’s long-term sustainability and operational resilience. The grant is part of a historic funding round in which the New Jersey Cultural Trust distributed over $1 million to 37 nonprofit history and humanities organizations across the state - the largest single award cycle in the Trust’s history. The Cultural Trust’s ISF program is unique because it moves beyond general operating support to tackle the structural financial health of an organization. “This grant marks a significant milestone for our organization” said Joy Kurland, Executive Director of the JHSNJ. “By establishing a cash reserve, the JHSNJ is creating a financial safety net that allows us to focus on our primary mission: preserving the rich, diverse history of life in Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic Counties. This stability ensures that our archives, and stories remain protected for present and future generations, regardless of economic shifts.”

The IFS is a program designed to help cultural institutions address structural financial challenges and build operational capacity. For the JHSNJ, the cash reserve will provide the liquidity to respond to emergency facility or archival needs.

The Jewish Historical Society of North Jersey serves as the premier repository for the history of the Jewish community of its tri-county area and plays a vital role in the cultural fabric of the Garden State.
“As we look towards 2026 and the upcoming 250th anniversary of our nation, investing in the stability of our history organizations is more vital than ever, " said Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, who oversees the Cultural Trust in her capacity as Secretary of State.

The JHSNJ is grateful to have its work recognized by the Cultural Trust and for this significant grant.
